What’s New in the All-New Mazda CX-5 Now That Google Gemini Has Arrived

The all-new Mazda CX-5 has a fresh addition to its tech lineup. On October 26, 2026, Mazda Canada announced that Google Gemini is available to eligible users in the CX-5 equipped with Google built-in. Gemini is an AI assistant from Google, and it gives the CX-5 a more conversational voice experience.

What exactly is new, and what was already part of the package? This guide sorts it out. First, we cover the new abilities Gemini brings. Then we recap the tech that was already in place, so you can see how the pieces fit together.

New: An Assistant That Understands Context

The headline change is how Gemini listens. Mazda says CX-5 owners can talk to their vehicle in everyday language, without relying on specific voice commands. Gemini also understands context, which helps it figure out what you mean from the flow of the conversation.

New: Requests That Build on Each Other

Gemini supports multi-step conversations. You can ask a question, then follow up with another that builds on the first. For example, you might look for a place to eat, ask about one of the options, then ask for directions without starting over.

New: Playlists Picked for Your Mood

Gemini handles entertainment on demand through apps such as Spotify and YouTube Music. A new touch is playlist recommendations tailored to your mood or activity, so the music can match a quiet commute or a weekend drive.

New: A Smooth Handoff From Your Phone

Gemini lets you continue tasks, searches and conversations started on your smartphone through compatible Google services as you move from phone to vehicle. A search you started before leaving can carry on once you are behind the wheel.

New: Hands-Free Messages and Arrival Times

You can send messages, share arrival times and manage communications hands-free using natural, conversational language. Telling someone you are running late takes one spoken request.

New: Climate and Vehicle Info by Everyday Speech

Gemini can adjust supported vehicle functions, including climate settings, and access vehicle information using everyday speech. It cuts down on trips into menus while you drive.

Why These New Abilities Matter on the Road

Mazda says each of these abilities serves one purpose: helping drivers stay focused on driving. Gemini reduces how often you need to move your attention between the road and the vehicle’s controls, which matches the human-centric design approach Mazda follows across the CX-5.

It also lines up with what drivers told Mazda. A June 2026 national survey commissioned by Mazda Canada found that 46 per cent of Canadians prefer built-in voice assistants for using in-car technology, and 67 per cent prefer technology that works quietly in the background.

Already Part of the Package

Gemini builds on tech that came with the all-new CX-5 from the start:

  • Google built-in on every trim: The GX, GS and GT all include Google built-in, with Google Maps for navigation and Google Play for in-vehicle compatible apps.
  • Large touchscreens: A 12.9-inch full-colour centre touchscreen is standard on the GX, GS and GT, and the GT Premium Package brings a 15.6-inch screen, Mazda’s largest ever.
  • Digital cluster and head-up display: Every CX-5 has a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and the GS and GT add the windshield-projected Active Driving Display.
  • Smartphone mirroring: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, wired on the GX and wireless on the GS and GT.

Mazda also designed the latest Mazda Connect system to accept over-the-air updates. Mazda says Gemini can continue to evolve through future software updates, expanded functionality and additional language support.
